Growing up in a big joint family in Jaipur, India, I was always surrounded by ladies wearing beautiful colourful saris. It was fascinating to see how the prints and fabrics change with each season. Cottons, Doria and voiles in the summers . With autumn and winter would come one of my favourites - The silk saris - the delicate drapes and their elegance is so captivating. My mom would get new ones almost every autumn winter season with the latest colours and print designs in trend . New blouses and petticoats would be made for each one in matching fabrics.
But, what happened to the 2 - 3 year old saris after they were out of fashion?
One thing I remember is that some of them would be exchanged for new brassware and steel utensils! There were these groups of people who went house to house looking for sarees which were still in good wearable condition and do this barter work.
I don’t know if this is still in practice, not in the big cities that I know of.
Being fascinated by the silk saris , the repurpose and revive collection which basically is about reducing wastage and minimise the impact of producing new textiles gives me the opportunity to reuse these saris into new products. These saris are cleaned, repaired and repurposed into beautiful one of a kind dressing gowns, kaftans and dresses.
Made from vintage silk saree fabric, they come in a variety of colours and patterns and no two are the same.
Soft, lightweight and versatile. Wear as a dressing gown, beach cover up or incorporate into an everyday outfit. Dress them up, or down!
As each piece is unique, I haven’t figured out the best way to present them on my website just yet…. It’s work in progress 😁
